about me

My name is Tilmann HEIL and I am trained in social and cultural anthropology and interdisciplinary migration studies. My current research project Valued Difference is on urban hierarchies and inequalities based on ethnographic research with West African and Southern European migrants in Rio de Janeiro. Since my doctoral work, I have sharpened the notion of conviviality in my book Comparing Conviviality as a process of interaction, negotiation and translation from which forms of minimal and fragile sociality emerge. I have addressed situations of ethnic and religious plurality and multilingualism.

Currently, I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Maria Sibylla Merian International Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America (Mecila) the Iberian and Latin American Department of the Historical Institute, and the Global South Studies Center, University of Cologne, as well as the National Museum (PPGAS) of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Until 2020, I was a FWO PEGASUS Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at IMMRC/Anthropology at KU Leuven. In the same period, I collaborated with Meron Zeleke on gendered migration from East and West Africa, funded by the VolkswagenStiftung. I also held a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Centre of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social Integration" at University of Konstanz where I also coordinated a four-year doctoral programme. During my doctoral training from 2009-2013 at the University of Oxford, I held a Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Goettingen and was affiliated with the Oxford Diaspora Programme (International Migration Institute), the African Studies Centre and COMPAS (Centre on Migration, Policy and Society).
